Peter Lohmann's Mailing List - Issue #15
Welcome to our 139 new readers since the last issue!
LOTS of New Blog Content!
I've been busy over on my blog. Check out these 2 brand new articles:
Can I Hire a Property Manager for My Own House? This is a subject close to my heart. Many years ago we tried to develop a homeowner management product (basically, property management but for the house you live in). It never took off, but in this article I round up a few companies that are making a serious go at this idea.
The mini-Berkshires (Micro-PE) Another roundup, this time of small private equity groups that are acquiring small businesses across a wide variety of industries. My business partner was intrigued to learn it was possible to invest in mini-Berkshire type companies (micro-PE). He asked for a list, so I shared the few that I knew on Twitter and quickly got some other great suggestions.
I'm regularly writing new blog posts with original, quality content. You can check out the back-catalog here (2 pages). If you're a newer subscriber there's some gold in there that you may not have seen.
Guest Appearance - Think Like an Owner podcast
Does your business run on EOS, or are you trying to learn more about the book Traction and the EOS system? You'll probably enjoy this episode. Ayo Phillips and I do a deep-dive on all things EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System). This episode is a breakdown of why we decided to implement EOS, choosing between self-implementing versus hiring an implementer, benefits we’ve realized from using EOS, how EOS impacts company culture, and our advice for other operators considering EOS for their businesses. You can go listen to it here, or just search for Think Like an Owner in your favorite podcast player.
Special Offer - The Operator's Handbook
Alex Bridgeman (the host of Think Like an Owner podcast) publishes a quarterly print publication called The Operator's Handbook. I've been a subscriber since it launched late last year, and it's the most exciting piece of mail I get each quarter, without exaggeration. Long-form print articles are a dying art, and you almost never see content aimed at small business operators - The Operator's Handbook is a renaissance. Here's a bit more about it:
Running a small company is hard, and doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
The Operator’s Handbook tells the stories of small company operators like you and me. These stories come in the form of high-quality interviews on growing sales, hiring and training and (unfortunately) firing employees, and managing an expanding team and culture. We talk about tracking metrics, generating new efficiencies, and all the responsibilities of operating a small company.
If you run a small company, this is the publication you’ve looked for, but never found. We work with operators, for operators, without distractions. Join your business-owner peers in the endless pursuit of better.
What's more, the very next issue will have a lengthy article by yours truly - all about using Notion in your small business. If you've seen my video on using Notion or read my tweets, and wanted to know more about how and why we actually use it to get stuff done in our property management business, you'll want to subscribe now. The articles are print-only, so it will not appear online.
The best news is, I'm able to get you 10% off a subscription if you use offer code PETERL2022 at checkout! Using this code will also help support my newsletter.
A Word About Sponsors
Sponsorship for Season 2 of Owner Occupied is closed (we're full), but if you're interested in sponsoring a future season of Owner Occupied (or this newsletter), please get in touch by replying to this email.
I'm also looking to sponsor a few SMB or property-management related newsletters to extend the reach of my own writing here, so if you're taking sponsors for your own newsletter, please let me know by replying.
Closing Thoughts
To build wealth efficiently:
Structure your professional life to convert “work” into “equity value”, without passing through “income” (where taxes crush you).
