Updated: List of VC-Backed PM Companies
About a year ago, I wrote up a list of 12 property management company startups that took VC (venture capital) funding. Initially I made the list out of my own curiosity, but it's kicked off some very interesting conversations. The list shows only companies that are actually physically managing properties (not just property management software or PropTech companies, for example).
I recently went through and completely updated the list with a few new companies, a name change, an acquisition, and additional funding raised. Check out the full list here!
Security Deposit Alternative Products
Traditional security deposits are starting to become passé in some jurisdictions. Renter’s Choice legislation, which forces property owners & managers to provide alternatives to the classic security deposit, is gathering steam nationwide and is already the law of the land in Atlanta, Cincinnati, and my home city of Columbus. Last year I wrote up a huge blog post comparing the various products that purport to replace the traditional security deposit. You can read the full blog post here. Below is a summary of my findings:
Ohio & Texas Events
Three upcoming events I'd like to share, in case you are interested in attending:
Capital City Conference: John Blatchford is running a really cool real estate conference in Cincinnati, Ohio from March 31st to April 3rd. It's called Capital City. I'll be there! John restores historic buildings; his work is incredible.
SMB Ohio Meetup: April 22nd in Columbus, Ohio. Join me, Reg Zeller, John Wilson, Kelcey Lehrich, Chrissi Sanders and more. Location somewhere near downtown Columbus. Small business owners, investors, and searchers. RSVP here.
Texas RE Meetup: I'll be hanging out in Austin the week of May 2nd, catching up with some friends who live there. I'll almost certainly be looking to organize a real estate meetup. Are you in Austin? Let me know!
Property Management Twitter List
I maintain a Twitter List of people who chat about the business of property management. You can follow the list here if you want more property management discussion in your Twitter feed! Should you be added to the list? Reply and let me know!
Livestreaming Property Management Hangout
Once in a while I jump on Twitch and talk about property management & small business topics (while I play Rocket League). If you want to be notified when I go live, go follow me on Twitch! You don't need an account to watch or chat. Be sure to follow me on Twitter, too - I always tweet when I'm starting a livestream. Would love to have you jump in and chat with me.
Advice for a 28-year-old
A follower DM'd me.
"Turned 28 today. Have any advice for a guy who is trying to wrap up his twenties strong?"
Matter of fact, I do. Here's what I told him:

This Twitter thread went semi-viral yesterday - with 1,600 likes, 245 Retweets and counting. I tried to distill what little wisdom I've gained in life, into a few quick words. Maybe you will enjoy the content also.
That's all for now, be well!
