Ride the Waves
The first day back at work after vacation is always difficult, I’ve learned.
Your body is tired.
Your brain feels fuzzy.
What was my computer password, again?
I’ve just returned from Tulum, MX with Crane
I used to really fight this. I should be able to push through! I have so much to get caught up on! I should be well-rested and sharp; after all, I just got back from vacation, darn it! I would double down and force myself to work through it.
I’ve learned that’s mostly fruitless. And this goes for way more than just vacations.
You’re going to experience days where you’re sharp, motivated, and can absolutely crank on projects. Your inbox dwindles rapidly, communication is fast and efficient, meetings are over a blink.
You’re also going to experience hours, days, and even occasionally weeks where you can’t seem to get anything done. I need to tell you that this is completely normal. You are not a machine. It’s tempting to fight through it, beating yourself up all the while. But this just doesn’t work. In fact, I have found that it just prolongs the down season. Rather than fighting it, try just accepting that this is how things are right now. Go for a walk. Go home early. Watch a movie. Lay around in bed on your phone, whatever. Don’t fight it. And don’t feel guilty!
What you resist, persists.
I’ve found that by giving myself some grace when my head or body just isn’t in the game, I can actually get back to the game faster. Go slow to go fast type thing. This goes against the hustle & grind culture, especially among entrepreneurs.
Give it a try and I think you’ll find it’s a much more human approach to work. Ride the waves, don’t fight them.
THIS ISSUE IS PRESENTED BY TENANT TURNER
If your property management team lives in AppFolio, but leasing data is stuck in other tools, Tenant Turner’s AppFolio Stack ™ integration can help you.
The two-way sync connects AppFolio and Tenant Turner, so you eliminate duplicate data entry, stop syndicating incorrect listing details, and centralize leasing data while you level up to automated leasing.
When prospects inquire, Tenant Turner handles the scheduling, screening, and showing coordination, then automatically syncs the data into an AppFolio Guest Card, and keeps it updated throughout the leasing process.
When you add or update listings in AppFolio, Tenant Turner pulls them in right away and syndicates your details accurately.
The best part? All that happens without you having to lift a finger, which isn’t something our competitors can say.
One property manager reported saving at least 4 hours per week on data entry with the Tenant Turner AppFolio integration, which helped her get units on the market faster.

Podcast Archives: Asset Management Isn’t Free - So Why Are We Giving It Away? feat. Mark Brower
This conversation started with a simple idea: what if we stopped pretending asset management was “just part of the job?” In this episode, Mark Brower and I explore a model where property managers charge 1% of assets under management, bundling real portfolio oversight with day-to-day operations. Think mortgage visibility, reserve escrow, proactive performance reviews, and long-term strategy, not just rent collection and maintenance. (Also available on Apple Podcasts & Spotify)
Last Friday, I wrote about response-time expectations forcing property managers to choose between call-center efficiency and relationship-based communication with a single point of contact. So I’m curious… how is your PM company structured? I’ll share the results next Tuesday.
